Sound-Reactive Science ✦ Magnetic Wonder ✦ Physics You Can Feel

Some things are impossible to explain until you see them.

Living Liquid is a ferrofluid display that reacts to sound — iron nanoparticles sealed inside a glass sphere that spike, pulse, and collapse in real time with whatever you play. Connect via Bluetooth or AUX, play music with a strong beat, and watch the liquid move. Hold the included magnet close and it reaches toward you. Pull away and it falls.

This is not a speaker. It is something rarer — a piece of physics that fits on a desk.

Quietly introduces the science of magnetism, fluid dynamics, and electromagnetic response — through something that is simply beautiful to watch.

Safety & Care Notes

Age — Suitable for ages 14 and above. Adult supervision recommended for younger users. Keep the handheld magnet away from children under 3.

Glass sphere — Handle with care. Do not drop or strike the device. The ferrofluid inside causes permanent staining and cannot be removed from fabric, skin, or surfaces if the sphere breaks.

Ferrofluid — The fluid is sealed inside the device. Do not attempt to open the sphere or tamper with the seal. If fluid contacts skin, wash immediately with soap and water. If it contacts eyes, rinse with clean water and seek medical advice.

Magnet — Keep the handheld magnet away from pacemakers, hearing aids, credit cards, and magnetic-sensitive devices. Persons with implanted medical devices should not handle the magnet.

Temperature — Do not expose to temperatures below -10°C or above 50°C. Do not leave in a parked car or direct sunlight. In UAE summer conditions, this is not precautionary — it is essential.

Charging — Use only the included USB-C cable or a compatible certified cable.

Storage — Store upright on a flat, stable surface.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND LIVING LIQUID

In 1963, a NASA engineer named Steve Papell was trying to solve an unusual problem.

In zero gravity, liquid rocket fuel floated freely inside the tank. There was no reliable way to pull it toward the engine. Papell's solution was to make the fuel magnetic — to suspend microscopic iron particles inside it so that a magnet could draw it in any direction, even without gravity. He called it ferrofluid.

The fluid itself never became rocket fuel. But what Papell created — a liquid that responds to magnetic fields while remaining stable, free-flowing, and completely non-toxic — turned out to have applications nobody anticipated. It is now used in the cooling systems of hard drives, in precision medical imaging, in acoustic speakers, and in dynamic art installations around the world.

What you are watching when you play music through Living Liquid is ferromagnetism made visible. The electromagnet inside the device pulses in response to sound. The iron nanoparticles in the fluid follow the field — rising when it strengthens, falling when it fades. The spikes you see are called the Rosensweig instability, a physical phenomenon first documented in 1965, where the surface of a ferrofluid forms peaks as magnetic force overcomes gravity and surface tension.

It is sixty years of physics. On your desk. Responding to your music.

How to Play

Charge fully before first use. Connect your music via Bluetooth or the included AUX cable. Play a track with a strong beat — bass-heavy music produces the most dramatic movement.

Watch the ferrofluid respond.

To use the handheld magnet, hold it 3 to 5 centimetres from the glass sphere and move it slowly. The liquid will spike and reach toward it. Pull back and it collapses. This is not a trick — it is the electromagnetic field pulling iron nanoparticles through oil.

If the fluid ever clumps after extended magnet contact, move the handheld magnet in slow circles near the sphere for about a minute. It will re-disperse.

Living Liquid connects via Bluetooth or AUX. It is a visualiser first — Bluetooth allows your music to trigger the display. If you want strong room audio, pair it with your existing speaker and let Living Liquid do what it does best.
